31 days, 31 gifts – Perttu Kivilaakso Edition!

Today I present to you…Perttu Kivilaakso! Perttu is a classically trained cellist, with a metal streak. He’s a member of the phenomenal Finnish band, Apocalyptica. Sadly, not very many people have heard of this band, even though they are quite simply, amazing. They started out doing Metallica covers – Nothing Else Matters played on the cello, is just stunning. Over time, they’ve had some fantastic singers perform with them – Ville Valo (HIM), Corey Taylor (Slipknot/Stone Sour), Cristina Scabbia (Lacuna Coil), Nina Hagen, Till Lindeman (Rammstein), Sandra Nasić (Guano Apes), Matt Tuck (Bullet For My Valentine), Max Cavalera (SoulFly/formerly Sepultura/NailBomb/Cavalera Conspiracy), Marta Jandová (Die Happy) – just to name a few. But today is about Perttu. He earned himself a lifetime chair in the ‘Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra’, but has since left, as he wanted to focus all of his time into Apocalyptica – which is fantastic news for fans, as we need to see more of the metal cellists!

Interesting little facts for gamers, Perttu composed the music for ‘Max Payne 2’, Apocalyptica’s music also featured in the PS3 game, M.A.G. (S.V.E.R).

I’ve been fortunate enough to see Apocalyptica a few times, and they are just…words can’t even describe how amazing they are. Refuse/Resist (a Sepultura cover) is one of my favourite songs, and Perttu is so adorable when they play this live, he rocks out, takes his top off (he should do that more often!), and shouts the lyrics – along with the audience. Perttu is a truly talented, and amazing man.

Enjoy the video, and check this brilliant band out! =)

  1. This is truly sublime! Kids at school who sneer at your more traditional instrument players should be shown this, and perhaps they would understand – it’s not all greensleeves!
