31 days, 31 gifts – Barbara Kruger Edition!

Today I give you some of my favourite Barbara Kruger works. This women influenced much of my A-level art, and photography projects. I was obsessed with this woman, for the longest time. Her work is so…thought provoking, and some of her slogans are so aggressive, that you can’t help but take notice. I just love how she took images from mainstream magazine publications, then over-layed them with her aggressive slogans, that often depicted power struggles for control – along with slogans that often questioned your desires, feminist views, and consumerism.

I love the sense of anger, and hatred I always get from this image…whether those emotions were supposed to be conveyed, or not.

Many of her works were in black and white, with the bright red slogan banner over-lapping the image. I love the words on the above image. ‘Your body is a battleground’, it’s such a simple phrase, but it delivers such a punch to the gut. Brilliant.

The above image is what inspired my A-level art final project. To me, this image shows how some people really think of themselves. The world sees someone who is fine, but when you look in the mirror, you’re broken. Shattered inside, you keep pretending to be fine, but ‘you are not yourself’.

    1. My old art teacher introduced me to her work, as he thought my aggressive approach to art (I’ll have to show you some of my stuff sometime), could be better expressed, in the style Kruger used – the overlapping of slogans, and flashes of red on b&w. Some of her work is brilliant, think you might like some of it =)
